TESTIMONIALS

What Our Patients Are Saying

"When I started to have anxiety issues and my doctor couldn't help, I began searching for somebody who could. In calling around, I couldn't get in with anyone for several weeks. I then called Platinum Psychiatry and spoke with Mel. She was kind and compassionate and went out of her way to help me book an appointment for the very next morning. Platinum Psychiatry was very helpful and I would recommend them."

- Jeff

"My initial visit with Dr. Shorten went very well. I was comfortable with discussing my problems and with his responses. I felt "equal." He seemed understanding of my choices and thoughts, which means a great deal to me. I'm looking forward to my next visit! I've been seeing psychiatrists for nearly ten years, and it is rare for me to look forward to seeing a new one. Decent prices without insurance."

- Madison

"Very professional, compassionate, and genuinely concerned about you as a patient and not your pocket case. I came to Dr Shorten feeling like a wreck but he listened, listened, and listened again. He has both me and my teenage son on track to feeling more like our usual selves."

- Christina

I searched for a Dr. for my boyfriend to meet with for weeks knowing that my boyfriend was reluctant to go. I was most concerned that the experience might not go well and my boyfriend wouldn’t give it another shot. Boy am I glad we went here. Dr. Shorten was AMAZING and not only made us feel comfortable but nailed it across the board with listening and helping my boyfriend to understand what’s going on. Do yourself the favor and schedule. You will not be disappointed.

- Michelle

"A brilliant, patient-focused psychiatric practice. As another reviewer had mentioned, their customer service is impeccable. The doctor himself is VERY skilled in bedside manner, and hearing the patient out. He answers your questions thoroughly, and you feel as though he cares about how well you're doing. He has helped me to achieve better results than any practitioner I'd encountered before him. Truly a Platinum-level practice!"

- Cooper

"I have been a patient for several months. Easy to get refills, is one of the few doctors who actually listened to what my goals were, and what medication I wanted to stay away from. Highly recommend. He is open to both Western and Eastern medicine and is very thoughtful and understanding. Genuinely cares about his patients."

- Alexis

"After having the worst summer of my life and feeling afraid it would never get better, I finally gave in and saw Dr. Shorten. He listened and offered solutions, giving me precise information on what to expect and when to expect it. I started to feel better immediately and now here I am a few months later feeling like my old self again and once again being able to be the mom, wife, and employee I want to be. I couldn't have done it without his advice and support. The hardest part is often reaching out for help, I know this firsthand. I encourage others to consider reaching out to care about themselves enough to do so with Dr. Shorten. You deserve to feel better and he has the knowledge to help you get there.. he certainly did for me."

- Rachel

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have Questions? We Have Answers

If you don’t see your question answered below, check out our full FAQ list here.

How will I get my prescription medication?

If prescribed, your provider will send your medication to a local pharmacy for easy pickup.

Why do you need to monitor my symptoms?

Anxiety and depression can be complex, and finding the right treatment requires ongoing assessment. To ensure you’re making progress, we’ll ask you to complete regular check-ins to share how you’re feeling. This information will help you and your provider track your journey and make any necessary adjustments, allowing for the best possible outcome.

Are antidepressants effective?
Research shows that antidepressants are highly effective in alleviating depression symptoms, with many individuals responding positively to their first prescribed medication and a significant percentage achieving remission.

While antidepressants can be effective, there are ways to further enhance their impact:

  • Using advanced technology and data-driven insights, providers can analyze symptom patterns and personal characteristics to identify the most effective medication and dosage more quickly.
  • Regular progress tracking allows you and your provider to make informed decisions and adjust treatment as needed, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
  • Incorporating therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan often leads to even better results. If you’re considering adding therapy, exploring this option could be beneficial.
What are the risks of taking antidepressants?

Antidepressants, while beneficial, can sometimes cause rare but serious side effects. It’s crucial to understand these risks before starting treatment and to contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any severe reactions.

FDA Black Box Warning:

SSRIs and similar medications may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially in individuals aged 24 or younger. Be vigilant for worsening mood, behavioral changes, or suicidal thoughts, particularly during the initial months of treatment. If you notice any of these signs, seek help immediately. For emergencies, dial 911 or visit the nearest emergency department, or call 988 to connect with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Serotonin Syndrome:

This rare but serious condition occurs when there’s an excess of serotonin in the brain, leading to symptoms like rapid heart rate, sweating, muscle stiffness, fever, and confusion. Avoid combining SSRIs with MAOIs, TCAs, St. John’s Wort, amphetamines, sumatriptan, or linezolid. Seek medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding Risk:

The combination of SSRIs with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Common NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), and celecoxib (Celebrex).

Bipolar Disorder Warning:

Sometimes, depressive symptoms can be the first signs of bipolar disorder. If you experience symptoms of mania—such as extreme euphoria, reduced need for sleep, or racing thoughts—contact your doctor immediately.

Pregnancy and Birth Defects:

SSRIs may pose an increased risk of birth defects. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of antidepressant use with your healthcare provider.

Cognitive and Motor Impairment:

Some antidepressants can affect your ability to perform tasks requiring judgment or motor skills. Exercise caution and avoid potentially hazardous activities, particularly when starting a new medication.

Hyponatremia:

Low sodium levels in the blood, or hyponatremia, may occur as a side effect. Symptoms include mental changes, headache, nausea, muscle spasms, and seizures. Seek immediate medical care if you experience these symptoms.

Risk of Glaucoma:

SSRIs can cause mild pupillary dilation, which may trigger angle-closure glaucoma in susceptible individuals. Consider being screened for susceptibility and discuss preventive options like an iridectomy with your doctor.
